Notes on the Various Editions of The Mathematica Book
The Mathematica Book (English language version) has grown as
follows:
First Edition (1988): 749 pages
Second Edition (1991): 961 pages
Third Edition (1996): 1395 pages
Fourth Edition (1999): 1470 pages
Fifth Edition (2003): 1488 pages
Between the First and Second Editions, a very large fraction of the
text of the book was changed, and the following significant items were
dropped (mostly at the suggestion of the then publisher):

Appendix A: Some Examples of Mathematica Packages
Mathematica Objects Grouped by Category
Between the Second, Third, and Fourth Editions, most of the changes
were pure additions. For the Third Edition, the "Tour of
Mathematica" was redone and "What Is
Mathematica" was dropped. The "Graphics Gallery" was
completely reworked.
Each successive edition has had a different cover design, as well as
different page-layout design and different graphics for part openers. The
acknowledgments section has also changed.
